'This isn’t about whether we like or dislike Brand - it’s about the truth'

The scandal engulfing Russell Brand has escalated dramatically with an alleged sexual assault reported to the police and the postponement of three of his shows.

By peddling conspiracy theories and loudly protesting his innocence, the comedian is unlikely to stymie a forensic examination of the shocking charges against him — which include rape and sexual grooming.

Everybody is innocent until proven guilty and the Metropolitan Police say as yet no investigation is under way. But women who make truly disturbing allegations, particularly when they go to the police, must be heard and their complaints pursued vigorously.

With the BBC, Channel 4, movie makers, charities and many more bodies examining past relationships with Brand the whole affair is expected to grow. This isn’t about whether we like or dislike Brand. It’s about the truth.

A stickler for good behaviour, the late Queen would have been appalled at the conduct of Boris Johnson and his wild servant Dominic Cummings. If the monarch with an iron core could strip Andrew and Harry of royal titles and duties, she would have had no trouble letting this disgraceful pair know We are not amused.
