Vladimir Putin has become a “second Adolf Hitler ” according to Ukraine’s president, who urged the world to consider the dire potential consequences of a Kremlin victory.

In a new interview, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky slammed people in Russia for repeatedly re-electing the warmonger into office for nearly 25 years, save for a gap when Putin served as prime minister. Now he has suggested a Russian victory in his country could bring forward a catastrophic third world war if he is not stopped.

He told CBS: “Russian society has lost respect for the world,‌ it elected and re-elected him and raised a second Hitler. It did it. We cannot go back to the past. But we can stop it here. If the Russians reach Poland, what will happen next? World War Three?”

The Ukrainian media often refer to Putin as 'Putler', likening him to the leader of Nazi Germany in the Second World War.Ukraine yesterday claimed to have retaken Klishchiivka, a village close to the strategically important Bakhmut. Zelensky’s military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said there was still hope of a key objective being reached ahead of winter. ‌He said: “Ukraine's armed forces may have time to break through Russia’s land corridor with occupied Crimea before the onset of winter.”

Over the weekend Russia was reported to have opened fire on its own troops when they surrendered the village of Andriivka - about six miles south of Bakhmut - as part of a slow but steady . The 3rd Assault Brigade said it surrounded the Russian garrison in what it described as a "lightning operation" and destroying it over two days.

Posting on Telegram, it shared a clip said to be taken a day after it recaptured the area. The aerial footage shows Kyiv's soldiers ordering Russian troops to lie on the ground as they surrender, before an explosion suddenly goes off on both forces.

The post reportedly read: "Assault group 2 of the mechanised battalion takes another group of prisoners. At the same time the enemy, realising that the village is lost and his soldiers are surrendering en masse, orders to open ' on their own.'"

The announcement of reclaiming Andriivka came early on Friday from the General Staff of Ukraine's armed forces. It described the recapture as a breakthrough on the southern flank of Bakhmut and "key to success in all further directions". Just hours before confirming the capture of Andriivka early on Friday, the brigade contested a statement by Ukraine's deputy defence minister Hanna Maliar saying the village was reclaimed. The fighting in and around Bakhmut, a salt-mining town now in complete ruins, marked the war's longest and bloodiest engagement.
