Rory McIlroy may have good reason to feel luck is on his side as he continues his preparation for the Ryder Cup in Italy.

The Northern Irishman has been taking part in the BMW PGA Championship over the past few days. He eventually ended up finishing joint seventh with a score of 13 under-par - with New Zealander Ryan Fox running out the victor.

McIlroy eventually finished five shots behind but tried everything he could to get himself back into contention at the 18th at Wentworth. He was already ten shots off the pace, with Ludvig Aberg leading at the time. However, McIlroy astounded fans with what was an eye-catching effort, dubbed the 'luckiest shot ever'.

A 311-yard tee shot left him in the first cut of rough, giving him a tough task of reaching the green within three shots. McIlroy managed to do just that. His initial effort looked destined to fall directly in the water but it bounced off of a wooden sleeper, jumped over the pond and landed in safety on the green on the other side.

The crowd were left stunned and gave a massive applause after seeing the huge break. With the ball safely in position, McIlroy followed up with a chip onto the green and tapped home a simple put to make par. A number of fans dubbed the effort the “luckiest shot ever” with the DP World Tour also taking to X with a similar response.

McIlroy’s stunning shot comes after he took aim at the BMW PGA Championship. A huge delay due to fog saw him birdie the final hole at Wentworth in near total darkness.

"It was a s***show,” he said after making 71. “The fog obviously delayed things, but I've never remembered having that many players on 17 and 18. It's not as if they teed us off in tighter slots or anything.

"We're the last group to maybe get done, so we were maybe fortunate that way, but it's hard for me trying to play the last well and make the cut - it was a bit of a mad dash and a scramble to get finished.”

McIlroy will be aiming to produce a few more wonderful shots as he embarks on his next Ryder Cup campaign. He has claimed that his and Team Europe's preparation has them heading into the match in an ideal mindframe.

He said: “We're in a good spot. The leaderboard is awesome. We had a really good day in Rome on Monday, the team's been shaping up really well for the last couple of months, everyone's been in pretty good form.

“It's still almost two weeks away until the first ball is hit on the Friday morning but I'm sure all the boys are all just so excited to get to Rome and get going. I'll certainly be chomping at the bit to get started.”
