A picture of two doppelgangers sat next to one another on a train, completely oblivious to the other's presence, has ignited social media.

The snap captured two uncannily similar men in almost identical outfits sat just one row apart on a ScotRail train, and has gone viral, sparking a number of jokes online.

The photograph, capturing two people with grey hair, black glasses, beards, and strikingly similar red checked shirts, has taken the online world by storm. The Daily Record reported that many were left scratching their heads, questioning if they've stumbled upon a "glitch in the matrix".

The pair, both engrossed in their phones held in their right hands and facing the same direction even sport similar facial hair and are seemingly mirror reflections of one another.

Humorous comments flooded in on the image-sharing site Imgur. One user asked: "Amazing coincidence? No, just twin brothers riding the train with their wives." Another said: "It's like one of those "spot the differences" puzzles. Full beard vs goatee. Shirt pocket pattern vertical vs diagonal."

ScotRail also joined in the jokes. A spokesperson for the firm joked: "It's amazing how our trains not only bring people together, but their fashion sense as well. Great minds do more than think alike."

The comments continued as more users joined in. One wrote: "It's just one guy and he's moving back and forth super fast." A second remarked: "Hey, I know one, or both, of those guys!". A third added: "Copy + Paste."

The peculiar snap was also shared on The Archbishop of Banterbury Facebook page, where it sparked further intrigue. One user commented: "I hope these men see this. Even better if they saw each other at the time."

Another follower said: "It's the space/time continuum. The phasing is out." Meanwhile, another Facebook user commented: "Glitches like this happen occasionally when software is being updated."
