John Lewis and Waitrose are recruiting more than 10,000 staff ahead of Christmas.

Most of jobs on offer will be temporary, seasonal vacancies, parent company John Lewis Partnership said today. The group will hire over 2,900 temporary roles in sales and merchandising positions across its 34 John Lewis stores.

In Waitrose meanwhile, the retailer will take on more than 2,800 seasonal staff across 329 shops, including supermarket assistants, night shift workers and customer delivery drivers. The group is also recruiting for 2,700 festive roles through recruitment agencies, with jobs including warehouse workers and drivers to help the firm fulfil online delivery and click and collect orders.

John Lewis Partnership said it will be hiring for 1,700 further positions across both Waitrose and John Lewis in a variety of areas over the coming months. John Lewis has also revealed it will launch its Christmas shop online on August 31 and in stores on September 27.

Lisa Cherry, executive director, people, at John Lewis Partnership, said: "We're hugely proud of the way our two brands have become part of the excitement that surrounds Christmas and this is a great opportunity to be at the heart of that at such a special time.

It comes after Aldi announced it will create more than 800 jobs in new stores across the UK between now and Christmas. The discount chain is opening new branches in towns and cities such as Oldham, Flitwick and Coventry.

The types of roles available will include managerial positions, caretakers and cleaners, as well as store apprentices. Aldi has over 990 stores and currently employs around 40,000 people.

Kelly Stokes, Recruitment Director at Aldi UK, said: “As we continue to invest in new stores, we’re looking for hundreds more colleagues to join our incredible teams across the country."
