We all have different views when it comes to romance, and what one couple sees as a cute gesture might be another couple's worst nightmare.
And one woman has left her best friend fuming after she slammed her fiancé's proposal as "super cringey and uncomfortable", simply because it wasn't to her tastes.
The woman explained she went to her friend's house for a birthday dinner, and was left stunned when her friend's boyfriend got down on one knee during the meal and asked the birthday girl to marry him - and used a unique SpongeBob SquarePants reference to help him seal the deal.
The proposal included a 'weird' reference to SpongeBob SquarePants (Nickelodeon)During the dinner, the birthday girl's now-fiancé left the room and came back playing the harmonica, before launching into a "terrible" rendition of the song Gary Come Home from the hit animated children's series.
When he was finished with the song, he got down on one knee and asked his girlfriend to marry him, to which she said yes.

But the whole event has left a bitter taste in the woman's mouth, as she took to Reddit to fume about the "secondhand embarrassment" she felt - especially as she claims her friend has never expressed an interest in SpongeBob.
She wrote in her post: "My friend invited a group of us over for her birthday last night. During dinner, her boyfriend leaves the room and comes back in playing the harmonica. It was a little odd, but I assumed he was showing off or something.
"Then, he starts singing Gary Come Home from SpongeBob. Like the whole song. His singing was terrible and the whole thing was super cringey and uncomfortable. Other people thought so too because we were all looking at each other like 'what the f**k?'.
"After he finishes singing, he goes over to my friend, gets down on one knee, and proposes. She said yes and we all congratulated her but for the rest of dinner, I was having severe secondhand embarrassment.
"Later, she and I were cleaning up and she asked what I thought of his proposal, I told her it was weird especially since she's never watched/liked SpongeBob. They haven't really talked about marriage before so she was completely surprised and I told her that makes it even weirder.
"She got offended when I said this and accused me of not being happy for her. I pointed out she seemed embarrassed too during his charade. We didn't speak the rest of the night and I don't get why she was so upset. A proposal should be romantic, not whatever the f**k that was."
Commenters on the post were critical of the woman's complaints, as many of them said that just because she didn't enjoy the proposal doesn't mean her friend didn't, and it was rude of her to moan about it to her friend's face.
One person wrote: "Are you the proposal police? It doesn't matter what anyone thinks of the proposal but your friend! Romantic gestures for one person are different for others. Different strokes for different folks! Apologise to your friends for being negative and move on.
While another added: "What you feel is romantic could well be someone else's version of horrific. It wasn't your place to feel secondhand embarrassment. It wasn't your place to tell your friend it was weird. If she was happy, you should have been happy for her, but instead, you've made her upset. There was no need for you to do that."
And a third said: "Okay the entire proposal does sound cringe. But your friend was obviously happy and you should have been happy for her too. Sure she did ask you your opinion on it, but calling it a charade was needlessly harsh and just rude."
