PS Plus' August 2023 lineup is still a mystery ahead of being revealed later this week, but we've got our own predictions on what subscribers may be downloading at the start of August.
The PS Plus Essential August 2023 reveal is set for this Wednesday, July 26. While we won't know the games until they're confirmed by Sony itself (or leaked, just like last month), it's always fun to speculate on what we might be in for this month. Last month we predicted that Marvel's Spider-Man, Alan Wake Remastered and Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania would all be contenders, and – not to brag – but we got Alan Wake right.
Players have until next Tuesday, August 1 to download Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Alan Wake Remastered, and Endling: Extinction is Forever, which is when the August 2023 batch will be available for download.
At the time of writing, no PS Plus August 2023 leaks for the Essential tier games have surfaced. However, as we've seen for a long time now, Twitter leaker @Billbil_kun has been leaking the lineup consistently. Billbil_kun typically posts leaks on the day before or day of the lineup reveal, so if it breaks in the coming days, we'll update you when it does.
PSVR 2 is already losing to the Meta Quest 2 in the VR headset battleOur July PS Plus predictions were based on looking at last year's July 2022 lineup, and the original release dates of the games included. For example, the biggest PS Plus July 2022 game (Crash Bandicoot 4) first launched in October 2020. So for this July, we looked at big releases from October 2021.
Fur our PS Plus August 2023 predictions, we're first going to take a look at what was included this time last year:
The PS Plus August 2022 free games selection are a contender for the best month the service has ever seen, including a couple of gems from 2020 – Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2. Activision's Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 remake of the original PS1 titles launched in September 2020.
Based on last year's PS Plus August free games, my predictions for this year's PS Plus Essential August 2023 games are as follows:
Diablo 2: Resurrected
Lost Judgment
Sonic Colours Ultimate
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
My first guess was very easy, looking back at September 2021's big releases – Activision put out another remake almost exactly a year after Tony Hawk with Diablo 2: Resurrected. So this is a likely pick for August this year.
Also released in September 2021 was Lost Judgment – which is a spinoff of the Like a Dragon series. While this doesn't correlate date wise to last year's selection, it could be included for August 2023, in keeping with the Yakuza trend. Staying in the Sega stable, there was another game the publisher released in September 2021: Sonic Colours Ultimate. So my guesses are very much Sega and Like a Dragon/ Yakuza themed, after the headliner of Diablo 2.
PS Plus February 2023: free games lineup includes a groovy treat for subscribersAs for a wildcard pick, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy released around the same time as the other games I've mentioned, and it seems like a title that's overdue for a PS Plus launch. Obviously PS Plus doesn't stick to trends like this 100% of the time, but these seem like safe picks to me based on past lineups.
