Sainsbury's is selling new £2 fruit and vegetable boxes across 200 of its UK stores.

The supermarket's "Taste Me, Don't Waste Me" boxes are being introduced as a way to help prevent food waste.

The big four supermarket said the scheme will also help provide affordable and nutritious healthy food to those struggling with the rising cost of living.

You will be able to find the fruit and veg boxes in Sainsbury’s fresh produce aisles in participating stores.

Sainsbury's has said that all products included are "carefully selected" to make sure they are still fresh.

Most of the products will be placed into the box loose while others which contain allergens such as celery and organic products will remain in their packaging.

Some fruit and veggies will not be available in the discounted box deal and include products with a "use by date" and products in specialist packaging such as lychees and physalis.

The launch of the scheme nationwide comes after a successful trial in January and is part of the supermarket's pledge to halve food waste across its value chain by 2030.

Sainsbury's is one of the UK's largest supermarket chains with over 600 supermarkets and 800 convenience stores, so you will need to check if you're local is part of the scheme before heading down.

Richard Crampton, director of fresh food, at Sainsbury’s said, “At Sainsbury’s, we’re committed to helping our customers access tasty, nutritious food that’s better for them and the planet too.

"It’s great to see that shoppers have been enjoying the ‘Taste Me, Don’t Waste Me’ boxes, which is why we’re really pleased to roll out the trial to over 200 supermarkets, helping even more people across the country.

"We believe that everyone deserves to eat well at an affordable price, and we hope this additional support will ensure that good quality food doesn’t go to waste.”

Sainsbury's is not the only supermarket to implement an initiative like this, recently Aldi rolled out its "Too Good to Go" scheme across all of its 900 stores.

The discount store offers offering "Magic Bags" which will include a range of grocery products that are approaching their sell-by or use-by dates.

Priced from just £3.30 each, these bags will contain at least £10 worth of food.

A few year's ago, Lidl launched its Waste Not scheme which gives customers a chance to buy a five kilo box of fruit and veg for just £1.50.

The £1.50 box includes imperfect produce, so things that are damaged, discoloured or deteriorated but which are still good to eat.
