The village sign boasting the UK's longest village name – including 11 Ls – has poked fun at Chelsea FC – joking that the struggling football club is “the only place with more Ls”.

The Premier League club has lost more matches than it has won this season – clocking up its 16th defeat last night after losing 4-1 to top three team, Manchester United.

And with the odds stacked against Chelsea once again for their final game of the season this Sunday against Newcastle, bookmakers Paddy Power decided to light-heartedly rub salt in the wound with a cheeky jab at the team.

The sports betting company hijacked the welcome sign for Welsh village Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, and “twinned” it with the football club.

The tagline underneath the village name read: “Twinned with Chelsea FC, the only place with more Ls” – complete with the Paddy Power logo at the bottom of the sign.

Betting odds suggest that Chelsea are likely to end the season with 17 losses, as Newcastle are currently 7/5 to win this weekend.

In comparison, the Welsh village – known as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll for short – features just 11 Ls in its name.

Locals from the village in North Wales were shocked to learn the news that the place they call home had been very unofficially “twinned” with the West London club this morning, when they woke to find the famous sign erected to greet visitors and tourists alike.

For context, Man City’s star striker Erling Haaland scored 36 goals this season – one less than Chelsea’s entire squad managed in the same period.

Rachael Kane, spokeswoman for Paddy Power, said: “Football is booming in Wales at the moment, with Hollywood A-listers catapulting local clubs to major success.

“Given it’s renaissance, we thought Chelsea might benefit from some Welsh magic – and with a population of just 3,000, they might need the support of every single one of them come Sunday. Chin up lads, Poch is en route!”
