King Charles' private secretary recalls touching gesture for terminally ill mum

Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard were joined by former deputy private secretary to King Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort Scott Furssedonn on Thursday as he opened up on the heartfelt gesture the then-Prince of Wales made when he was going through a hard time.

Kate began the conversation by asking: "What did you experience personally that was the moment that was the mark of the man?"

"Oh, goodness me I could point to lots of things but [there's] one thing that's very personal to me which made a tremendous difference," he replied.

"Shortly after I started working, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and we lost her very quickly. The then-Prince, he barely knew me certainly never met my mother, but he sent her the most extraordinary handwritten letter telling her how sorry he was that she was ill and saying he hoped that she took comfort in a pride in me and and the rest of my family.

"And that's the sort of thing he did time and time again, because he knew that he occupied this extraordinary position that he could use to make a real difference in people's lives."

Ben went on to share his own experience of meeting the King.

He said: "My experience of meeting him was there was always this wonderful sense of humour, and warmth about which we know."

Katy Perry is just one of the famous names performing at King Charles' Coronation Concert and Scott admitted the then-Prince facilitated a special moment for him and his family with the global superstar.

The former deputy private secretary explained: "We were in India and Katy Perry was at an event to raise money for the Princes British Asian Trust, which is a charity started to improve lives and livelihoods in South Asia.

"And yes, Katy Perry was going to be there and I did happen to mention to him that my children and perhaps I, were big fans.

"Normally we would hold back at those events, those of us in the household so to not get in the way, but he very, very generously asked her if she'd have a selfie with me, which I mean huge brownie points with my daughters."
