A woman has been left outraged after being asked to show her ID to use the bathroom in a supermarket. The 22-year-old, from Seattle, Washington, explained how she was driving home with her boyfriend but needed to stop off at a grocery store to use their facilities.

She politely asked the shop worker for their bathroom code - but was asked to show her ID to make sure she was 'old enough' to use their toilet. Taking to Reddit, the woman said: "While we were out driving I told him I had to pee, so we parked at a nearby Safeway.

"We walked into the store and down the stairs toward the bathroom where a female manager stood acting like a security guard.

"I asked her what the bathroom code was. It’s common for grocery stores in Seattle to have codes to enter due to the large homeless population.

"She then proceeded to ask me for my ID because they are only allowed 25 kids in the store at a time."

Despite trying to assure her she is old enough, the manager refused her entry to the bathroom until she presented her ID.

"Frustrated and about to pee myself, I pulled out my wallet and showed her my horizontal ID," she added.

"She takes it out of my hand and looks closer at it as if a horizontal ID screams young child, although I do look very young."

Finally satisfied, the manager told her the code and allowed her to use the bathroom.

The woman said: "It was the fact that she was condescending when I told her I’m not a child because of my baby face.

"Yes, [that part of] her job is stupid. But it doesn’t mean she needed to treat a random individual like that just because it’s 'policy'."

Commenting on her post, one user said: "Seems like a lot of time wasted having a manager monitor the washroom.

"I do get that they want to keep kids from making a mess however it would make more sense to hire someone at minimum wage to watch the washroom and keep the manager doing actual manager stuff like running the employees and keeping the store profitable."

Another user added: "They must realise that if you pee yourself while they waste time checking your ID that they have to clean it up, right?"

A third user said: "How dare you have to do a normal bodily function!?

"I lived in Miami and I absolutely hated it because nobody trusted you to use the bathroom.

"I understand that some people use it for things that are not so appropriate, but it is a normal bodily function!"
