A cleaning expert has revealed a hack to cleaning mattresses which only takes half an hour and involves some make-at-home paste.

You might think that mattresses don't need to be cleaned that often but the truth is that they need a scrub at least twice a year to get rid of all the bacteria, dust mites and bodily oil that seeps into them on a daily basis.

As we spend a third of our lives sleeping, it is best to make sure that the bed is as fresh and clean as it can be and one expert has shared the best option for doing this.

If you're concerned about dust mites, allergies or the cleanliness of your mattress, sleep expert, Alison Jones at leading mattress company Sealy, has provided her top tips on cleaning your mattress .

To get the mattress sparkling clean, Alison said: "Check your mattress instructions first, but you can treat stains with natural cleaning products - baking soda (also known as bicarbonate of soda), salt, lemon juice, and water mixed together to form a paste.

"Let it sit for 30 minutes before wiping away with a damp cloth. Equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle can be used to spot treat odours - blot the area with a clean towel until the area smells fresh."

"Natural oils, such as lavender and rosemary, can also be used to add delicate floral notes to your bed and encourage sleep."

The expert added some more advice for how often you should flip and clean your mattress.

She said that you should rotate or flip your mattress every three to six months to keep germs and mites from building up too much on one bit of the bed.

This can also improve the lifespan of the mattress.

Finally, she said that cleaning the mattress every six months is a good time to leave it as this will keep it from getting too full of nasty mites and other bacteria.
