Anyone partial to a warm hot cross bun come Easter time may be disappointed by Greggs' latest announcement as the food chain has ditched the seasonal favourite from its menu this year.

Easter is still a good while away, but anyone who loves a hot cross bun will be avidly looking forward to tucking into one this spring. The news will cause heartache for Greggs fans as the humble hot cross bun has sadly been axed from its shelves.

Hot cross buns are traditionally eaten around Easter time and they have a deeper meaning than simply tasting delicious. The cross represents the crucifixion of Jesus, and the spices inside signify the spices used to embalm him at his burial. They may also include orange peel to reflect the bitterness of his time on the cross.

Christians traditionally give up something for Lent before Easter time, so tasty treats can be enjoyed once Lent is over.

But Greggs has decided not to add them to the menu this year, in favour of new additions than remain a secret.

A Greggs spokeswoman said: "While Hot Cross Buns won't be returning to our menu this Easter, keep an eye out for other Easter favourites that will be arriving in our shops soon."

If you're a hot cross bun fan though, don't fret, as supermarkets will still have them in stock.

In 2022, the Mirror did a taste test of supermarket hot cross buns, and one reigned supreme.

The Co-op hot cross bun landed the top spot thanks to the "lovely firm dough, with the perfect amount of fruit", and the "subtle cinnamon taste."

Recently, a Greggs super fan claimed that they could tell what someone looked like based on their favourite Greggs treat.

TikTok, user @smashed.pian0s didn't have all the answers, however, as Leah's line up had some notable gaps, including the famous sausage roll which viewers asked for her insight on. She couldn't give it and instead answered: "Literally everyone buys it."

Are you disappointed about the hot cross bun not returning? Let us know in the comments.
