Many of us love sipping a glass of bubbly to celebrate a special occasion, and with bottles of Champagne being pretty expensive, it's not uncommon to opt for a cheaper bottle of Prosecco instead - especially if you're just using it to mix with orange juice for a Bucks Fizz.

But buying Prosecco doesn't have to mean buying lower quality booze, as one wine expert has revealed there's actually a secret trick that can secure you the best bottle of bubbly every time.

According to an expert named Lexi, all you need to do is take a closer look at the label the next time you're in the supermarket, as there's a hidden code that guarantees the product you're buying is authentic.

Lexi, from the US, said quality bottles of Prosecco will be marked with "Superiore" and "DOCG" labels, as this denotes the "highest level of quality for Prosecco".

In a video posted to her @lexiswinelist account on TikTok, she said: "Prosecco hack - look for 'Superiore' and 'DOCG' on the label. This indicates the highest level of quality for Prosecco. It comes from a specific area within the region and has been made in a way that meets the strict standards of quality."

She then took a bottle from the shelf of her local supermarket and added: "This bottle was only $3 more than a standard, mass-produced Prosecco right next to it. So worth the extra few dollars."

DOCG is the highest classification Italian wines can be awarded, and stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, or "controlled and guaranteed designation of origin".

In terms of Prosecco, the DOCG classification is given to wines produced in two specific areas of Italy - those from the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene area, and those form the Asolo area - which are both located in the region of Veneto, according to Tastings.com.

Lexi's helpful video has been viewed almost 150,000 times, with commenters thanking her for her tips and offering their own advice.

One person said: "Also handy to look for one that says 'method traditionale', which means it's made the same way as Champagne but can't be called that!"

To which the expert replied: "Yes, good point! But that is less common for Prosecco specifically since it's almost always made using the tank method."

Someone else jokingly said the "best Prosecco hack" is to put it back on the shelf and opt for a Champagne instead, but Lexi argued she was trying to help those looking for a more affordable option.

She wrote: "Champagne can be really expensive, so I like to provide other options."
