Labour faces calls to expel Diane Abbott again over NATO remarks

Labour is facing calls to expel Diane Abbott once again after the newly-reinstated Labour MP made "dangerous" remarks about Nato.

Last Thursday, Andy Burnham brought the Mother of the House back into the party, with a formal warning over her second suspension, while a number of MPs cheered over the decision.

But the new Prime Minister is now facing criticism after Ms Abbott was accused of fuelling "pro-Putin propaganda" by one disgruntled MP.

The 72-year-old even branded Ukraine’s defensive war against Moscow a "Nato campaign against Russia".

"The reason there is such a hue and cry about military spending now is not because Russian forces are in Ukraine; that happened well over four years ago," Ms Abbott wrote in the Morning Star. "No, the reason for the outlandish claims about an imminent Russian invasion is simply because Trump demanded more military spending from Nato members…"

Ms Abbott also ridiculed the idea that Russia posed a threat to Europe, insisting that claims the Kremlin would "sweep through" the continent soon was "not a serious proposition".

Another MP laid into the "dangerous and irresponsible" claims, telling The Telegraph: "There is no Nato war on Russia, no Western conspiracy to invent a threat. Russia invaded Ukraine to seize territory, and has waged a war of annihilation.

"From a member of the public, such claims might be dismissed as delusional. From a sitting MP, they are dangerous and irresponsible."
