A violent brute in handcuffs dragged a police officer down the stairs while they were trying to arrest him before returning hours later to attack his girlfriend.

Thug Jack Williams had one handcuff on with a police officer holding the other when he fled, dragging her with him down a staircase.

The 21-year-old has been jailed for attacking his girlfriend and the escape which left the female officer severely injured on August 5 last year.

Police had turned up at the female victim's home in Middlesborough in the early hours after a domestic argument.

Arriving at the scene to find he had fled, a male officer searched outside while his female colleague stayed with the victim when Williams returned shouting for his girlfriend.

The officer moved to arrest him, resulting in the struggle which left her with a damaged coccyx and broken finger.

Williams also punched the female officer in the face whilst trying to escape, inflicting injuries which have meant she can't go back to her full duties since. The officer sustained injuries to her buttocks but she kept hold of the handcuff and the struggle continued as he tried to run out of the front door.

Williams returned to the house a few hours later and attacked his girlfriend.

She fled her property, but Williams followed and tried to drag her back by her hair.

His victim managed to get away and ran to her sister's, still wearing her pyjamas.

In a statement, the sister said that "she turned up on my doorstep with blood and grass stains on her, saying he had dragged her over the green", Teesside Live reports.

She added: "She had a bust lip and a cut to the back of her head."

Teesside Crown Court heard that Williams had caused some of the injuries to his girlfriend by the handcuff, still attached to him.

He was tracked down at 10.10am that morning on Albert Road in Middlesbrough.

He fled from police, but was caught and arrested after a short chase. He was found with cannabis on him, and tried to pretend he was someone else.

In a statement, the injured police officer said: "I called in sick to work and spent hours the next day in hospital. I couldn't carry out activities on my rest days and am now on light duties at work.

"The assault has affected my confidence at work and I've been having nightmares about the attack."

Williams pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, escaping lawful custody and to the possession of a class B drug.

John Nixon, mitigating, said that his client was found to be "immature" for his age by the probation service.

"It's clear that he doesn't function well - there's the suggestion of ADHD," Mr Nixon said, adding he hadn't "seen his three-month old son" since being on remand.

Recorder Nathan Adams told him: "That night the police officer tried to arrest you and you fought back. You effectively dragged her down the stairs.

"She got a bash to the head and a broken finger, and you fled. You returned hours later and assaulted your then-girlfriend."

Williams was locked up for two-years and made the subject of a restraining order, banning him from contacting his ex-girlfriend for eight years.
