The Friday afternoon peace has been shattered in Greater Manchester after a train derailed near houses.

Residents were left shocked after hearing a sudden ‘scraping noise’ in Audenshaw, Tameside.

The incident happened just yards away from houses and close to the Audenshaw Reservoir. Eyewitnesses said they thought it was an ‘earthquake’ after houses ‘began to shake.’

Moments later the emergency services rushed to Sidmouth Street after reports of a derailed train.

It is not thought to be a passenger train, but rescue crews are in attendance to help ‘make things safe.’

Fire crews arrived on the scene at about 11.35am, the outlet reports, and footage shows a cordon near a railway bridge.
