David Cameron urges US Republicans not to be swayed by Putin’s "lies" concerning Ukraine

The Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron’s remarks came as he continues to drum up support to unlock billions of dollars from America to support Ukraine’s war effort

David Cameron has pleaded with US Republicans not to believe Vladamir Putin’s "lies" and warned them against appeasing the Russian President.

The Foreign Secretary’s remarks came as he continues to drum up support to unlock billions of dollars from America to support Ukraine’s war effort. A Congress vote on a $60billion funding package for Kyiv has been held up due to political wrangling - with some of presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s allies opposed.

But it emerged yesterday Lord Cameron had failed to secure a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson - a Trump ally - over the deadlock.

Speaking to the US networks during his visit to Washington DC, Lord Cameron said he was not attempting to "lecture" foreign politicians. But he said: "I think there’s a real danger to British security, to American security if we allow Putin to win in Ukraine. It won’t stop with Ukraine."

He told CNN: "Everyone who wants to see an end to the killing and an end to the war. But you only get that by backing Ukraine, by showing strength. Peace comes through strength, not through appeasement and weakness."

There have been reports Mr Trump, who is vying to replace US Democratic President Joe Biden in the White House in November, is planning to push Ukraine to surrender territory as the price for peace with Russia.

Lord Cameron said: "I don’t think we should be discussing those things right now, we should be discussing how do we get Ukraine back on the front foot.

"They’ve showed incredible bravery. They’ve showed that they can win against Putin, they’re not going to lose for lack of morale, they’re not going to lose for lack of ingenuity on the battlefield. The only way they can lose is if we don’t give them the support they deserve."

He also urged US Republicans not to be taken in from Russian propaganda. He told MSNBC: "Don’t listen to Putin’s lies about Ukraine.

"It is a free democracy that wants to be an independent sovereign country, that wants to be our ally and our friend. And we should be standing by our friends, because the world will be watching if we don’t."
