Disney+ has unveiled the trailer for the new series from Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright. Premiering later this month, Renegade Nell is a fantastical action-adventure series centred on a young woman who is framed for murder and forced into a life of crime in 1705.

It stars Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland as the quick-witted and courageous Nell Jackson, who unexpectedly becomes the most notorious outlaw in 18th-century England. Aided by her superpowered sidekick – a plucky little sprite called Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed) – Nell soon realises that fate has put her on the wrong side of the law for a reason, a reason much bigger than she could have ever imagined: to defeat a magical plot against the Queen of England.

Every episode of Renegade Nell will premiere on March 29 exclusively on Disney+, which is currently available for just £1.99 a month with a new limited-time deal. The streamer’s ‘Epic Movies, Epic Offer’ promotion lets new and returning members lock in the £1.99 a month rate for three months – but you’ll have to act fast as the deal ends at 11.59pm on Thursday, March 14, after which it will return to the usual £4.99.

Renegade Nell is written and created by BAFTA-winning Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright, with acclaimed Sex Education director Ben Taylor serving as lead director. On Wednesday (March 13), Disney+ unveiled a new action-packed full-length trailer, showing the titular no-nonsense highwaywoman in action.

Alongside Harland, the eight-part British original series also stars Fear the Walking Dead’s Frank Dillane, Trigger Point’s Adrian Lester, The Sinner’s Alice Kremelberg and Line of Duty’s Craig Parkinson. Rounding out the cast is Ted Lasso star Nick Mohammed as Nell’s superpowered sidekick Billy Blind.

Speaking to Disney upon the show’s announcement in 2021, Renegade Nell executive producer Faith Penhale praised Wainwright’s creation of an “utterly original [and] endlessly entertaining world“.

“In Nell Jackson, Sally has conjured up yet another instantly iconic female lead,“ she said. “Her wit, warmth and boundless capacity for invention will make our journey through Nell’s riotous imagined life a very special ride indeed and viewers of all ages around the world will love the way Sally blends history and magic to create an utterly original, endlessly entertaining world.”

Disney+ is the UK streaming home of hit shows like Shōgun and The Bear. It’s also the only place to stream Oscar-winning Emma Stone dramedy Poor Things, acclaimed romance All of Us Strangers and Taylor Swift’s new and extended concert movie, The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version).
