It can be difficult to maintain an uneven or lumpy lawn, but one garden expert has shared his 30-second trick for securing a smooth outdoor space.

All green-fingered folk will know that a level lawn not only looks great, but it also allows more water and nutrients to be absorbed into the soil. Unwelcome bumps are often caused by animals looking for food, children playing on the grass, and nightcrawlers.

Winter weather doesn't help either, as surface water can cause long-term damage if left to sit on the grass, explains Love The Garden. Fortunately, gardening guru Bo Petterson has shared his simple lawn levelling hack, which he claims takes just 30 seconds.

Taking to TikTok, under the username @dadadvicefrombo, the expert demonstrated his reliable method for filling in the low spots in his garden. He said: "All you need is the right kind of soil and a two-by-four." When it comes to making the soil, he explained that you need two parts dirt and one part sand. Motioning towards his filled wheelbarrow, Bo said: "That way your grass will still grow through it but it’s easy to level out."

The gardener then "generously" shovelled the soil onto the low levelled areas, pointing out that grass seed is unnecessary because your turf will pair with the earth and grow through it. Once you have finished shovelling, Bo suggests stamping on the soil and "pack it down as best you can".

Placing his two-by-four in the middle of the soil, he then started dragging out the earth in one direction until it tapered out. Bo then pulled the dirt in the opposite direction, creating the same effect. This simple hack left his garden perfectly level, as Bo concluded: "That’s all you have to do."

The viral video has amassed an impressive 808K likes, and followers flocked to the comments to share their reaction. One user penned: "Thanks man, literally stopped in Home Depot today to see if I can rent a levelling rake for when I put top dressing down next week."

A second gushed: "Awesome. Dealing with torn up front yard from cement trucks that put in the pool, now I know how to repair it." A third added: "I needed this. I’m 66 and never knew this so thank you."

Another quipped: "I really wish I was smart enough to think of this seven years ago. I rototilled my entire garden to level it, then planted new grass seed." Meanwhile, others suggested different techniques, as one person shared: "I pull a large four by four square behind me with ropes. Pass in one direction then perpendicular. You get the flattest lawn ever!"
