While asparagus might be a favourite of those looking to eat healthily, it certainly doesn't last long in the fridge.

However, chef and writer Martha Stewart has shared the trick that she's been using to keep asparagus fresh. It's all in the storage method and using her trick will extend the fridge-life of the asparagus, keeping it fresher for longer.

Before buying the asparagus it's important to check for freshness, regardless of whether you are shopping at a farmers market, a stall on the high street, or a supermarket, you should look to pick up the freshest bunch available. The freshest bunch will have smooth skin, unspoiled tips, and a firm, upright posture.

Avoid limp spears and wrinkled skin which are indicators of dehydration or woodiness. Fridge etiquette is also important, proper refrigeration is important and you should remove any rubber ties or rubber bands to prevent the spears from being constricted.

For short-term storage, wrap the spears in a damp cloth or paper towel and place them in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator if intended for immediate use. However, if you are storing them longer, then Martha's top tip is to store the asparagus with a bunch of fresh herbs.

Trim the ends of the spears, cutting off no more than an inch, and stand them upright in a glass measuring cup, mason jar, or bowl of water. It's important to not put them in a tight and compact space, once you have given them a trim you can cover them with a plastic bag and pop them in the refrigerator.

Regularly check on the spears, refreshing the water if it becomes cloudy or evaporates. Typically, fresh asparagus lasts three to five days in the refrigerator.

Utilising Martha's method will improve how long your asparagus stays fresh, and using this method can extend its life to at least a week and even up to 10 days depending on its initial freshness. If your asparagus looks limp, you can attempt to revive them by trimming the ends and submerging them in a bowl of water. After an hour your asparagus will have plumped up and be ready to use.

Once cooked you should store asparagus in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where it will remain fresh for three to five days.
