BBC Call The Midwife viewers were in tears as they watched the 'emotionally draining' series finale.

Fans were taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as the 13th series came to an end. Miss Higgins watched as her son - whom she had given up for adoption while living in India decades earlier, died from a chronic kidney condition. Joyce Highland's estranged husband had been blackmailing and abusing her.

Her secret came out and she was supported by the other women, with sister Julienne telling her in emotional scenes: "Do you think I haven't seen a story like yours a thousand times over? Bright, valuable women brought to their knees by the ignorance and brutality of men?"

Viewers also watched as Trixie and her husband Matthew talked on the phone while he worked in America. During the phone call, he told her: "It's not forever. In four or five months' time I can come home and manage things from a distance. But I wish you were here." The duo reminisced about their wedding and their marriage before he repeated: "I wish you were here."

"I will be soon," she responded. "I'm coming out to join you." A delighted Matthew thanked her and said: "It's not forever." After watching back-to-back emotional scenes, fans were a wreck and rushed to social media to talk about how Call The Midwife always makes them cry.

One user said about Miss Higgins losing her son: "Why couldn't we have something happy for ms higgens absolutely balling my eyes out right now," while one person added: "Saved all the tears for the last episode." A heartbroken viewer commented: "Legitimately going to charge my therapy bill to everyone involved in this show."

"This episode is absolutely wrecking me. I can't take anymore sadness," one person said. "Oh Trixie. I don’t want her to leave," another posted while one wrote: "Aww Trixi right decision but so going to miss you." One exhausted viewer posted: "I am emotionally drained."

The final episode of the dramatic season saw Olly Rix, who plays Sir Matthew, leave the show after a four-year stint. There are no plans for him to return to the show but it has been said the "door has been left open" for him, meaning there is a possibility he could return in the future.

Matthew moved to New York in a desperate bid to relaunch his career after the property firm he inherited from his father collapsed. Alcoholic Trixie, who has been in recovery but has been unable to sleep over the stress of losing her husband and their comfortable lifestyle, eventually rang him to declare: “I’m coming out to join you.”
