Whether you're looking to set up your new PlayStation console, or are just hoping to play some split screen with your friends, here's how to connect a PS5 controller to a PS5.

If you've just got your hands on a new PlayStation console and you want to set up your shiny DualSense controller, we'll guide you through the process of how to connect a PS5 controller to a PS5. We also go over how to connect additional PS5 controllers to your console if you're looking to couch-play some of the best co-op games.

This guide goes over how to connect the default DualSense controller to your PS5 or PS5 Slim console as well as the upgraded DualSense Edge gamepad. If you're looking to connect a third-party controller then be sure to refer to your gamepad's manual for specific instructions.

It's a good idea to update the firmware on your PS5 console and your DualSense controller before getting started, or you may face issues.

How to connect PS5 controller to PS5

When you first unbox and set up your PS5, you'll need to connect your PS5 controller to finish setting up your console. Here's how to do it:

  1. Turn on your PS5 console and connect the DualSense controller to the USB-C port on the front of the console using the included USB-C cable
  2. Press the PS Button in the centre of the controller, the light bar should blink and the player indicator LED should light up
  3. Once this LED is on, you can now unplug the controller and use it wirelessly

You should now be able to use your DualSense controller wirelessly with your PS5 console. If you need to charge the controller, you can just plug it back into your PS5 and it will charge while your console is in use or in sleep mode, but not when it is turned off.

How to connect additional PS5 controllers to PS5

If you want to connect more controllers to your PS5, you can do so wirelessly by following the steps below.

  1. Make sure the new PS5 controller is turned off (if it isn't, you can hold down the PS button until it turns off)
  2. On your PS5 console, navigate to PS5 Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories
  3. On the controller you want to connect, press and hold the create button and PS button at the same time
  4. Select the controller you want to connect when it comes up under the Accessories Found list

A DualSense controller can only be connected to one PS5 at a time, meaning if you disconnect from one console, you'll have to go through these steps again to reconnect it to another console.
