Tesco has urgently recalled a popular £2.20 product as it poses a serious allergy risk and could make some people incredibly ill.
The supermarket chain has pulled a batch of its Tesco 18 Cupcakes as some of the products have incorrect cakes in them which contain soya which is not declared as an ingredient on the packaging. The Food Standards Agency says cakes from Tesco's 12 Party Cupcakes - which contain Soya - had been put into the soya-free 18-pack product.
This poses a risk to people who have a soya allergy. If someone consumes soya who has an allergy they could experience various symptoms such as vomiting, stomach cramps, indigestion, diarrhoea and - in severe cases - anaphylaxis which can kill if not treated urgently.
The products which have been recalled from Tesco have the batch code 24026 and have the best before date of February 27 2024 (27/02/24). If you have purchased an affected product, then you can return it at any local Tesco store for a full refund. You do not need to have a receipt, nor do you need to return it to the store you originally bought it from. Tesco has urged customers with a soya allergy to not eat the product.
In its recall notice, the supermarket chain said: "Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused. If you require further details, please contact Customer Services directly on 0800 505 555."

Products can be recalled for a range of different reasons including safety – if a product displays risks for the customer – or quality – when the product isn't working as it should be. The Food Standards Agency is in charge of issuing alerts when there is a problem with a food product. The product can either be "withdrawn" which is where is it taken off the shelves or "recalled" which is when customers are asked to return it.
Food products need to be recalled if they are found to have been contaminated with pathogens that could cause food poisoning, or if plastic or metal has been found in the product due to manufacturing faults. Food items also need to be recalled if any allergen information is missing or incorrect.
