Stubborn mattress stains can be unsightly, but they're not impossible to remove as cleaning fans proved when one woman was desperately asking for advice on how to get rid of them.

Stains can occur on your mattress due to numerous things, such as coffee, blood, dust, dirt, food, and sweat - all the things you'd want to get out of it as soon as possible, but likely don't know how.

When a cleaner found a cheap method to remove stains from her mattress, however, she didn't want to gatekeep it and shared her knowledge with the members of the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page.

Posting before and after photos of her mattress, the woman wrote: "Just wanted to share this tip I found online a while ago when I was struggling with sweat and blood stains on my mattress. I followed the baking soda and white vinegar natural method and it worked. The stain had disintegrated. I was very impressed."

While many will already have these ingredients in their cupboards, if you don't white vinegar can be purchased from Tesco for just 35p, and baking soda can be bought at The Range for £1.49. This makes the fantastic cleaning hack cost less than £2 - a whole lot cheaper than having to replace an unsightly mattress.

She also listed out the steps households need to take for this method to remove stains effectively. Begin by applying baking soda directly to the stain before spraying the area with some white vinegar - just enough to cover it.

When applying the vinegar solution, remember that less is more. The aim is to dampen the mattress, not soak it. Overwetting the mattress can lead to mould and mildew, which is another issue you'll then have to address.

Then, leave those two ingredients to bubble for 30 minutes, before using a clean cloth and dabbing the solution away.

It's important to note that to prevent mould and mildew, it's crucial to let your mattress completely dry before putting any bedding back on it. To speed up drying, open windows in your bedroom, or use a fan for a short while before placing bedding back on.
