Tesco has introduced a new "magic" checkout system in a huge overhaul of its self-service checkout system.
The supermarket giant has moved to introduce so-called "magic tills" in a big change that the firm said will end irritating "unexpected item in the bagging area" problems at the checkout. Tesco is trialling the new technology which sees all the shelves weighed, meaning all customers will have to do is pop their purchases in their baskets.
The new system uses technology which implements sensors and cameras to Tesco stores, watching the items shoppers place in bags. It then automatically tells you the amount you've purchased.
Customers can then visit the self-service checkouts where they are presented with a list of items in their baskets, before running over them and ensuring each is correct, and then paying for their goods, reports Birmingham Live.
Sarah Quiggin, head of store customer experience, said: "This is about cutting out some of the challenges around scanning. Sometimes there can be issues with certain barcodes and products. The alert for an 'unexpected item in the bagging area' is a classic one that customers get frustrated about, understandably."With the 'no-scan' tills, you turn up to the checkout and you pay."

The Sunday Times reports it has been launched in a Hammersmith store. One shopper told the newspaper he was a big fan of the shake-up, saying: "It was like magic the first time, because it came up on the screen without me doing anything. I was confused - but I use it every time now."
It comes after Tesco launched GetGo stores, which is a checkout-free shopping experience available in certain Tesco Express stores. Once you’ve signed up for GetGo, shoppers can scan a QR code at either the entrance or exit, depending on the store, and shop as usual. Using a combination of cameras and weight sensors, GetGo stores can tell what you’ve picked up and will charge you automatically when you leave the store.
