'The King's Speech shows the Tories are visibly running out of steam'

APID, shallow and tired, we received more of a King’s note than a speech.

Behind the pomp and ceremony of Parliament’s state opening is a UK Conservative Government visibly running out of steam.

Nothing on the cost of living crisis. Nothing on the NHS. Nothing on public services. Nothing for struggling breadwinners. No wonder Charlie curled his lip, reading Rishi Sunak’s dross with the contempt of a Year 10 pupil forced to recite strict school uniform rules.

You wait decades to inherit mummy’s job then they hand you drivel. Britain needs change, a reset, fresh start yet the Tories are delivering a bit more of the same.

Political gimmicks, political traps and dividing lines aren’t governing. They’re shabby electioneering. But this doesn’t feel a throw of the dice, a dramatic shift in the dial to reverse Conservative and national decline.

The Tories are so out of touch after 13 years their hopes are vanishing. The glaring missed opportunities would see a footballer dropped, ordered to train with kids and told told to replace square boots.

One down with two to go when Jeremy Hunt’s Treasury statement in a fortnight and, if he’s still Chancellor, next Spring’s Budget are the last big set pieces for a fading Government.

Much pain, suffering and damage will be inflicted on people before Labour and Keir Starmer get their chance at an election I expect to be this time next year. Sunak’s scorched earth approach crowns the Tories as wreckers not builders.
