Halloween is upon us once again, and horror fans will be keen to kick back with some frightening favourites to get in the macabre mood. A spooky season staple for any cinephile should be John Carpenter’s iconic horror, Halloween.

The film takes place in the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, 15 years after Michael Myers – just a young boy at the time – murdered his sister on Halloween night. Now fully grown and seemingly unstoppable, Michael escapes from a mental hospital and returns home to kill again.

Arguably one of the most influential films of its time, Halloween popularised the slasher genre and set the benchmark for all that followed. The 1978 classic also introduced cinemagoers to two icons of modern cinema.

As well as its haunting masked serial killer, Halloween marked the feature debut of ‘scream queen’ Jamie Lee Curtis. Aged just 19 at the time, the daughter of actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh went on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars with roles in Trading Places, True Lies, and more recently Rian’s Johnsons Knives Out.

Alongside Curtis, Halloween starred English actor and former Bond villain Donald Pleasence as Dr. Samuel Loomis. The film spawned seven sequels, a 2007 remake from musician and filmmaker Rob Zombie, and the recent reboot trilogy from Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green.
