A home expert has shared what areas and items in our homes harbour the most germs and says that neglecting their cleanliness could make you ill.

You might guess that it is the toilet or kitchen bin that is the most germ-ridden part of any home but the expert says that you really need to think outside the obvious spots.

There's plenty of everyday items that you might not even think you need to clean but if you leave them without a spritz for too long they could make you come down with a cold, throat infection or a fever.

Terry Fisher from leading home buying service, We Buy Any Home, has revealed where these spots are in a lot of homes and urges people to get cleaning them more regularly.

He told The Sun that if a surface is touched very often then it deserves a regular clean.

"These surfaces can provide a nice home for a range of bacteria, from Staphylococcus aureus and salmonella to E.coli and mould," he explained.

The recent winter chill has given rise to several seasonal illnesses so it is important to get on top of cleaning every bit of your home effectively.

So here are Terry's top spots to clean that are often neglected.

Toothbrush holder

You might never think of this as a dirty spot as you associate it with cleaning your teeth but Terry says that these items can pick up germs from a flushing toilet everyday so if you have one it is best to clean at least once a week.

Computer keyboards

Whether you use a computer for work or for watching Netflix in the evenings, if you are touching your keyboard everyday there is a chance it is in desperate need of a clean.

Most of us may never have done this but Terry said: "Failing to disinfect our keyboards regularly allows the germs and bacteria to continue to build up and for new ones to be transferred from our fingers, too."

This is another one you might use without even batting an eyelid but if you neglect to wipe away the bacteria from this item they can build up an cause you to fall ill, according to the expert.

Light switches and plug sockets

Terry added: "Just like any other surface in the home that we touch regularly, these should be disinfected once a week."

Kitchen appliances

The same goes for the kettle and buttons and nobs on your stove, oven and microwave. You might never think that you need to clean all of these smaller items but Terry explained that neglecting to do so at least once a week could damage your health.
