Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been told that he has “no shot” at surpassing Tom Brady as the best player in the history of the NFL.
Mahomes has entered the fourth year of the 10-year $450 million (£363 million) which was signed back in 2020. And now the quarterback has entered the first year of the restructure which was announced on Monday.
The Chiefs and Mahomes agreed to a restructuring that affects the seasons from 2023 to 2026. As a result, it will see Mahomes become the highest-paid player in NFL history over a four-year period.
As part of the restructuring, Mahomes will see the money he is owed brought forward and earn $210.6 million (£170 million) by 2026. The deals came after recent contract announcements for Joe Burrow at the Cincinnati Bengals, as well as Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts for the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively.
Fox Sports analyst Skip Bayless was debating on the show ‘Undisputed’ about whether or not Mahomes could ever eclipse Brady and be considered as the best player in NFL history. Brady has been retired from the NFL since the end of last season, calling time on an illustrious 23-year career.
Joe Burrow backs Patrick Mahomes after Kansas City Chiefs reach Super BowlBrady won seven Super Bowl rings during his career, six with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bayless went on to argue that Brady’s achievements make it unlikely for Mahomes to pass him as the best player in NFL history.
“This is no personal shot at Patrick Mahomes because I think he's a really good kid,” Bayless said on ‘Undisputed’ on Tuesday.
“Speaking of shot, he's got no shot in his life of passing this guy. This guy in New England, Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr., won his first six Super Bowls with game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime. That's off-the-charts clutch.
“I've always said in totality his clutch-ness even eclipses [Michael] Jordan's clutch-ness [for the Chicago Bulls] just because he had so many more clutch opportunities on the biggest stage in your sport, the Super Bowl, to do what he just kept on keeping on doing.”
Mahomes has won two Super Bowls in his career with the Chiefs, including most recently against the Philadelphia Eagles in February. The 28-year-old is also the reigning NFL MVP winner, which he has won twice in his career and only one fewer than Brady’s total of three, which he last won with the Patriots back in 2017 despite losing to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII.
