The EFL gave Manchester United 's second Carabao Cup final goal as Sven Botman own goal - before later deciding to give it to Marcus Rashford.

The Red Devils academy graduate doubled his side's lead at Wembley after Casemiro had nodded home the opener. Rashford had exchanged passes with strike partner Wout Weghorst before being played into the box by the Dutch forward.

He then let fly with a low effort that took a touch off Botman and looped up over Loris Karius in the Newcastle net. Rashford duly wheeled away in celebration believing that he had managed to score the 25th goal of what has been an extremely prolific campaign.

Instead, he initially remained on 24 with Sky Sports confirming at half-time that the striker's effort had been given as an own goal by the EFL after it was deemed it wouldn't have found the net but for the touch of Botman. However, it was later confirmed by Press Association that the goal had been given to the striker after all.

It also means Botman avoids being just the fourth player in history to score an own goal in a League Cup final and the first since Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard in 2005. Regardless of the unwitting touch from Newcastle defender Botman, both Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher suggested that Karius should have done more to keep the ball out of the net.

The former Man Utd star said: "There is a deflection, it wasn't the greatest strike from Marcus Rashford, but the goalkeeper is going down very early, maybe for the first shot, and then his hand... he just can't get enough on it and it goes over his head.

He then asked colleague Carragher: "There was a lot of focus on Karius coming into the game, do you think he should have saved it?"

The former Liverpool defender replied: "Yeah he should have saved it, of course he should. It's easy to look back, and certainly with the presence and size and stature of Nick Pope, you think he'd have dealt with that comfortably.

"I think the biggest worry with Karius or any Newcastle fan with the goalkeeper was his lack of football, not what happened in a certain game four or five years ago. He'll lack sharpness and confidence no doubt."
