Trade union membership and strike action are fundamental rights imperilled by our hostile Government.

Introducing ever tighter union shackles when it loses an argument or fails to browbeat workers into subservience, the reckless Tories are wrong to violate international law. The TUC reporting No10 bullies to UN rights watchdog the International Labour Organisation is a shameful day for Britain.

TUC chief Paul Nowak recognises the anti-strike legislation is authoritarian and unjust. Too many Tories simply detest unions, seeking confrontation instead of co-operation. But repealing the unfair laws is a pledge from Labour leader Keir Starmer that is both principled and popular.

Widespread support for the recent waves of strikes also proves the Tories are no longer able to scapegoat unions for Conservative failures during the cost of living crisis.

Quake aid vital

As the spiralling death toll in Morocco’s earthquake tops 2,000, rescuers face a battle where hours and days count.

Villages now lying in ruins in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains are difficult to access in the best of conditions. Without medical supplies, shelter, food and clean water, more lives will be needlessly lost following the 6.8 magnitude quake.

Slashed by a Tory Government that knows the price of everything and value of nothing, money must be found from Britain’s stretched aid budget or the world will never forgive us. Our skilled rescue teams are famous around the globe. So, too, the generosity of the British public. Tory Ministers must not let us down.

Final Mo-ment

Stars of the Great North Run are the thousands of fundraisers, volunteers and spectators who line the route. Another one was Sir Mo Farah as he ended his glorious career with a fourth-placed finish. But the legend’s legacy will run on and on.
