Trippier warns Ten Hag that Newcastle's "annoying" tactic will return at Wembley

Kieran Trippier has warned Manchester United that Newcastle are bringing their dirty tricks to Wembley.

The Newcastle captain insists Eddie Howe’s team are ready to do what it takes to lift the club’s first trophy in 54 years when they meet the Reds in the Carabao Cup Final. And while United boss Erik ten Hag has urged his players not to let the Toon get under their skin, Trippier insists the Magpies are ready to unleash all the dark arts at their disposal.

Bury-born Trippier, who comes from a family of United fans and supported the Old Trafford club as a kid, said: “Some teams haven’t been happy with us this season - but it’s about being clever and using your experience.

“And I’ll be honest with you - I love it. Opposition fans aren’t going to like it, but as a neutral I think it’s good to see. I really don’t see why everyone’s kicking off about it!

“We’ve shown that we will do everything we can to win a football match. You’ve got to have that mentality if you want to win and be successful. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but personally I have experienced it a lot in Spain.

“You have to manage the game. It’s about being clever. If you want to win, if you want to be successful, you have to be cute in every single game.”

Tripper learned all about the art of winning ugly when he moved from Tottenham to join Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in 2019. He helped Atletico lift the La Liga title during his time in Spain - and Toon boss Howe also took a trip to Madrid to watch how Simeone prepares his players during a sabbatical from the game after leaving Bournemouth.

Newcastle take pride in their reputation for being a team that no-one likes to face. Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta have both been riled by Howe’s men this season.

And Ten Hag’s pre-game moan that his men must not be wound up by Newcastle at Wembley will have been music to the ears of those at St James’ Park. Trippier said: “Years ago, you looked at Roy Keane and Graeme Souness. These were hard men.

“You might not get away with their tackles these days, but it’s still competitive and we want to win. The best for me was Stefan Savic at Atletico. He used to pull people’s hair, even in training. It was crazy, honestly!

“You look at teams like Real Madrid and how successful they have been for many, many years. They have players like Sergio Ramos and Marcelo. They were the best at it - and look at the trophies they have won. They’ve won everything going. If you want to be successful you have to manage the game well and at the right time.”
