'We must keep Ukraine peace dream alive for kids - it will happen eventually'

For more than a year, Europe has been in turmoil.

A war, caused by one country invading another. It was almost unthinkable just a few years ago.

But it became a reality – one man’s lust for power bringing turbulence to an entire continent.

And it drags on. Every day, the world edges closer to the brink.

The UK Government should be applauded – the whole political system – for its determined stand alongside Ukraine.

And the British people should be proud, too. When called on, we opened our doors to those fleeing the bullets and the bombs.

We’ve seen leaders stride the international stage and seen the horrifying scenes from the front line… the missiles, the tanks.

People’s lives have been destroyed in the blink of an eye.

From normal life to devastation – homes and livelihoods gone.

It’s almost impossible to imagine being a child in Ukraine today. One minute, school, friends, hopes, dreams. Safety. The next, life changed forever.

Bomb shelters, air raid sirens, constant fear. These youngsters have lost family, friends. Once clear futures lie in hopeless ruin.

While it’s vital, of course, to send weapons to the front line, the biggest responsibility for the international community – for the UK – is to get those kids out. To make sure they are safe.

Today, we bring you a story from the children of that war. It is shocking and harrowing.

But there is also hope.

Vyacheslav fled Russian-held Donetsk and is rebuilding his life.

Dreaming, he says, is the answer. You dream what it is you want, so it will happen eventually.

He’s talking about peace, a peace we’re all dreaming of.

It will happen. Eventually.

Cause worth fighting

Thanks to the heroic efforts of campaigning mum Charlotte Caldwell, parents of children in chronic pain are about to see their little ones get some relief.

She fought to make medical cannabis free for kids with severe epilepsy to help her own son, Billy, but now others will benefit.

There’s still a long way to go but it’s a move in the right direction. It’s progress. It’s hope.

It’s been a long, difficult fight.

But it’s been worth every second.
