Jamie Carragher did nothing to stop fans from tearing into Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville after he was subjected to a number of X-rated chants at Craven Cottage.

The pair were on duty on Friday evening for Fulham ’s home draw with struggling Wolves - Pablo Sarabia and Manor Solomon exchanging strikes to ensure a share of the points. There was also plenty of entertainment off the pitch, too, as the travelling supporters took aim at Manchester United icon Neville.

With the pre-match build-up all concluded, Neville headed to the Sky Sports studio, whilst colleague Carragher retreated to the commentary gantry. Amid the game, Neville recorded a video of the away end at Craven Cottage - a vast array of supporters turned in the direction of the Sky Sports studio and chanting: “Gary Neville is a w*****!”

He appeared to take the chants in good spirits after turning the camera around on himself before revealing somewhat of a sheepish grin. Wolves supporters then replied with an applause in the direction of the Man Utd icon.

It did not end quite there though. The chants could be heard on the TV broadcast as well and just as Martin Tyler was set to stage his apology, Neville’s colleague Carragher intervened.

Having clearly enjoyed the mocking at Neville’s expense, he said: "Just let it breathe, Martin."

It was interestingly not the first time the former Red Devil has been on the wrong end of some unsavoury chants - and certainly not the first time that one of his colleagues has joined in. Ahead of his former side’s trip to Craven Cottage earlier this season, he recounted an interesting story of Paul Scholes also making a joke at his expense.

Recording a video back in November, Neville said: "You see this stand here in the background there, that's the first ever time that I heard the shout. There's some bloke about 50-years-old with flat caps on, it was freezing and we were warming up.

"And they started singing 'If the Neville's can play for England, so can I. If the Neville's can play for England, so can I. If the Neville's can play for England, if the Neville's can play for England'.

"And Scholesy was warming up with me and Phil, always did at right back down there in that corner, started singing along with them. Little b******."

Fulham also had their say at the time with a tweet towards Neville reading: “Sorry, Gary” alongside a grimace emoji.

Neville will certainly hope that his weekend improves from here on in. His former side Man United have the opportunity to lift their first piece of silverware since 2017 as they take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
