A woman has accused her boyfriend of ruining their holiday with his "tight" ways after he refused to buy her a bottle of water for less than €1. In a post on Mumsnet, a defeated girlfriend has shared a sincere rant about her money-conscious boyfriend whose skimping is making her stressed and anxious.
The frustrated girlfriend said that both of them earn about the same income and prior to their trip she saved and budgeted, even putting aside an emergency budget. However, her meticulous planning has been criticised every step of the way by her boyfriend who she claims wants luxury whilst being unwilling to splash any cash.
Labelling her boyfriend's fixation on cost-cutting as "extreme," she said: "He has been a real tight arse on this holiday to the extent that we don't even split things 50/50 but split it exactly to what we both had each. It's that extreme that if we are buying bottles of water in the shop, we buy our own separate and don’t combine any shopping (they're less than €1!)".
"When we're out for food, he checks the prices and calculates it up before he even orders to see what the potential cost would be," she revealed. "We went out for dinner, he ordered two starters while I ordered a main and he ended up taking my rice, etc., because he was too tight to order his own!!!"
Desperate to escape the holiday hell, the girlfriend said she's even looked for early flights home but decided to stay the two days as flights are sold out. Commenters have waded in and encouraged the girlfriend to see this as a learning experience and end the relationship once back from their trip.
'I don't want children staying up late at weekends - I really need adult time'
One commenter said: "As you have found out, going on holiday is a perfect way to determine whether you are compatible. He sounds like an a*****le, you know what you've got to do." Another person encouraged the girlfriend to salvage the time she had on holiday and end things after, as they said: "You've got two more days to salvage a few hours of lovely holiday. Wake up very early, while he's still asleep, and leave him a note saying you've gone to meet your friend for the day and you'll be back this evening. Then go and enjoy yourself without him. Also, I'd end it with him before you leave. Contact the airline and see if they'll seat you separately. You do not want to be going through customs with this man if he decides to stock up while he's there."
A third added: "No relationship should be this much hard work really, should it? Meanness is a really unattractive quality imo [in my opinion] and he will only get worse the longer you stay with him. Deep breath finish the holiday and shortly after you get back end it. It's not going to improve and if the sex is bad as well then really this relationship has no redeemable qualities."
