A TikTok doctor has revealed the different foods that may help to fight and minimise the risk of breast cancer.

Dr Sethmind who is a gastroenterologist, shared a TikTok explaining three foods people could eat to reduce the risk of breast cancer. A gastroenterologist, specialises in diseases that affect the digestive system.

In the video, Dr Sethmind said: “There are three foods I advise my patients to eat to minimise breast cancer. But first, broccoli and cauliflower contain sulforaphane which may reduce tumour growth and decrease oestrogen receptor activity.Second leafy greens like spinach and kale are packed with folate and antioxidants which support DNA repair and protect cells from damage.

''Third, flax seeds are rich in lignans which have oestrogen modulating properties. These may reduce hormone-related breast cancer risk. The third on the list is an exceptional source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids.”

Many factors influence the risk of cancer, including lifestyle and genetics. Even with a nutrient-rich diet, you still need regular breast cancer screenings like mammograms and manual checks. Always talk to your own GP before making any dietary changes.

Breast Cancer UK say: “Foods may contain compounds that are protective against breast cancer and others that may have a cancer-promoting effect. So, what you eat and what you don’t is important.”

“There is no ideal diet for breast cancer prevention. It is more important to pay attention to the proportions of individual foods. Many diets can be healthy and help reduce risk, including the Mediterranean diet, as well as vegan and vegetarian diets.”

“They all combine certain basic features, e.g. no or low red meat consumption and a high proportion of fruit and vegetables.”

If you have breast cancer, Cleveland Clinic advises that you avoid the following: caffeine, alcohol; raw or undercooked meat; fish or poultry. Equally, raw or soft-cooked eggs; unpasteurised dairy products or juice; unwashed fruits and vegetables, leftovers that are more than three to four days old, food that has been left out at an unsafe temperature for four or more hours.

Dietitian Anna Taylor adds that if you do have breast cancer: “Limit caffeine and alcohol, as both are dehydrating. Talk to your oncologist for exact recommendations. And if you’re having diarrhea, consider avoiding it completely, as both can worsen symptoms.”

If you don’t have nutrition-related side effects from your cancer treatment that limit your ability to eat and or digest food, Taylor says you can follow a generally healthy diet that includes: fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. You should also drink alcohol in moderation.

The NHS said: “Regular exercise and eating a healthy, balanced diet are recommended for all women and men, as they can help prevent many health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and many forms of cancer.”
