Gwyneth Paltrow has opened up about the difficulties of navigating her blended family.

The Hollywood star is stepmother to her husband Brad Falchuk’s two children Isabella, 19, and Brody, 17, and has discussed the complexities of the the role during a live Q&A session on Instagram.

Gwyneth, 50, encouraged her fans to send her questions for the live feature on her social media account, with one keen follower taking an interest in her experience of living life with a blended family.

They asked: “Do you find it hard sometimes to be a bonus (step) mom? I only ask because I do at time.” The Iron Man star then picked the question to respond to as she confessed to feeling that she “did find it really hard at first.”

She continued: “You know? There’s no book on this. Nobody tells us what to do. And in fact, all of the existing media around what a stepmother is casts us in this evil, villainous light. It’s kind of like trying to avoid landmines.”

She then went into more detail as she spoke about what it's like to join a family of teenagers and how it leads to “all kinds of fear” for the children.

Gwyneth continued: “But you know for myself, the minute I decided and fully embodied the idea that my step-kids were my kids and I loved them just as much, and I gave them the same rules and boundaries and just kind of wholeheartedly went for it, the easier the whole thing got."

The award-winning movie star wed Brad in 2018, following the breakdown of his marriage to former wife of 19 years, Suzanne Bukinik, with whom he shares his children. Gwyneth is already mum to daughter Apple, 19, and son Moses, 17, both of whom she shares with her ex-husband Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

Gwyneth recently made her return to Instagram after taking a brief hiatus from social media. She announced her temporary departure from social media early last month alongside a photo of herself. It showed the Goop founder sitting in a garden.

It appeared to have been taken at night and she credited actor John Hickey as the photographer. Alongside the photo, Gwyneth wrote in the caption: "Taking this full moon energy with me as I go into a social media break. She continued: "Going to work on being present," before concluding: "Happy summer."
