Hugh Jackman has been chomping his way through 5,500 calories a day in preparation for his return to the role of Wolverine.

The X-Men star, 54, has ramped up his fitness and eating regime ahead of his character's role in Deadpool 3.

The actor said that he was eating the enormous amount of calories, which is 3000 more than what the NHS advises the average man to consume.

He is given meals by his personal trainer and said that he "doesn't question anything".

"Food arrives and it's been counted out and it's 600 grams of carbohydrates and it's 270 grams of protein... and a certain amount of fat, I can't remember the grams, and then I have to eat that food for the day," he said on This Morning.

He said that his wife Deborra-Lee isn't sympathetic about his gruelling routine.

"I can't tell you how many times I'm like, 'Oh babe, I've got to eat again' and my wife is like 'Shut up!'" he laughed.

"Having me complain about eating? She's like, 'Oh poor you, oh you have to have another bite!'"

Hugh has played the ripped role since 2000, but he admitted that he had no idea the amount of work he would have to put in.

"I knew nothing when I went into these films," he told Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary.

"In fact, in X-Men one, if you look at it, I was cast three weeks before filming and all the scenes with my shirt off had to be pushed to the end... there is one shot, it was the first thing I shot, and the director was trying to hide my body!"

Returning to her flirty ways with Hugh, Alison suggested they haven’t been out for dates in a while due to his intense training for his Wolverine role in the new Deadpool film.

Hugh smiled, “Alison, we could always go and hit it at the gym!”

Alison replied, “Naaah!... Although I like doing heavy weights.”

Talking about the movie, Hugh smiled, “I’m doing a movie with Deadpool, I don’t like saying the actors name because he loves it! Is the feud still going on?

"It’s still going on… and it’s really hard as it’s my first time coming here since he [Ryan Reynolds] owned a football team, but I’m going to up it.

"Anyone can buy a football team, I’m going to become a football player… so Delia or Stephen Fry sign me up, I want to be a Canary! My mum was from Norwich and I’ve been a fan all my life.”
