Christian Eriksen could potentially play a role in Manchester United’s attempts to sign in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after convincing him to move to Tottenham.

The former Bayern Munich and Southampton midfielder has been identified as a late target for the Red Devils. United are keen to bolster their midfield options before the end of the transfer window, with Sofyan Amrabat and Ryan Gravenberch having also been mentioned.

Hojbjerg might be the more realistic option however. It has been suggested that United are considering a move for him, whilst his current employers Spurs are open to selling before the window closes amid previous interest from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

Should the 28-year-old move to Old Trafford, he would link up with compatriot Eriksen. Whilst the two have never played together for a club, Hojbjerg revealed that the playmaker played a key role in his move to Spurs from Southampton in 2020.

Quoted by Ekstra Bladet, he said: “I called Christian [Eriksen] and had a chat. I had some questions that I would have had clarified. And that was really positive. The talk I had with Christian, strengthened my desire and feeling to move to Tottenham.”

Since then, Hojbjerg has gone on to make 147 appearances for Spurs but appears out of favour this term. He has been afforded just two substitute appearances by new boss Ange Postecoglou.

During Hojbjerg’s time in North London, Eriksen has been on the move a fair amount. He had departed Spurs for Inter Milan before his countryman’s arrival.

His time at the Serie A club was cruelly cut short after the cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020. Eriksen was handed his first opportunity back in football with Brentford before he signed for Manchester United last summer.

He has already been joined by another of his compatriots this summer with the Red Devils sealing the signing of striker Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta. They paid £72m for his services but are still awaiting his debut as he recovers from a back issue.

Speaking out after being joined by his international teammate, Eriksen said: “I know it's been a massive, massive thing and still is [having Danes at Old Trafford]. Obviously, it's going to explode even more when he is going to have his debut. I'm happy there's another Dane at United who can show off the Danish flag.”

Should Hojbjerg link up with his Danish colleagues, he could potentially be set for a return to familiar surroundings this weekend on his debut. Man United travel to North London to take on Spurs’ fierce rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
