Dolly Parton has revealed the astonishing reason she had to say no to Kate Middleton and a spot of tea.

The music royalty, 77, received an invite to tea with Princess Kate while in London to promote her latest album. But she joked she couldn't accept for one main reason - Prince William's wife simply wasn't going to promote her work.

The shock revelation came as Dolly spoke about her new rock album on BBC Radio 2. She said of her busy visit to the English capital: "This time, Lordy, I even got invited to have tea with Kate but I couldn't even go."

She added: "I thought it was very sweet and nice of her to invite me and one of these days I'm going to get to do that – that would be great." But in a surprising turn of events, Dolly added: "She wasn't going to promote my rock album so I had to say no."

The 9-to-5 icon continued: "I love the people, the feel of London," before saying she "unfortunately" doesn't get a lot of spare time to take in the sights of the city while she's there on business - leading to her needing to snub the royal invite.

The Country legend's latest offering is due out in November. It will be her first taste of life in the rock genre having cleaned up in the Country scene. One hit which will feature on her new work is a cover of Let It Be. The iconic tune will also feature the last surviving Beatles members, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

Sir Paul, 81, recently admitted he was "pleased to be by her side" for the production. Dolly asked on Twitter: "Does it get any better than singing ‘Let It Be’ with @PaulMcCartney who wrote the song? Not only that, he played piano."

And the Beatles legend retweeted her kind words before thanking her for re-recording the hit. "Thanks Dolly for doing my song," he replied. "I love your version and am very pleased to be by your side on this one. Rock on! Love Paul.

Fans were also quick to comment on the remake of the tune with one user gushing over the pair's "beautiful harmonies". Another wrote: ""Dolly, Paul, Ringo, Mick, Peter - an amazing version of such an iconic song. Thank you for the beautiful version of Let It Be. You brought a big smile to my face. Peace and Love to all!"
