Saturday Kitchen star Matt Tebbutt was slammed for referring to Irish comedian Ed Byrne as British during the comic's guest appearance on the show.

The comedian said dark humour helps him cope with life's tragedies and presenter Matt joked that it was a "British" thing to do. Ed discussed how certain topics while doing a stand-up set can "alienate" audience members as he gave an example: "So this one's about my dead brother - there you go!"

"Nothing like British humour," Matt responded before repeating the phrase a few times. Ed added: "Yeah, the show's called tragedy plus time, it's all about... it was Mark Twain I believe who said, 'Humour is tragedy plus time'.

"So it's all about how dark humour and just jokes, in general, will get you through the worst moments in your life. And death comes to us all, you know, we all experience grief at some point in our life and the best way to do it is to laugh at it."

Matt asked whether it was a "particularly British way of dealing with grief" and Ed said it was "British stroke Irish" before Matt awkwardly laughed it off. "Well I think you'll find the people who have to deal with death, so doctors, soldiers, firefighters, people like that tend to have the darkest sense of humour you'll find of anyone because it's a coping mechanism, isn't it?" Ed continued.

Viewers were less than pleased with his blunder and took to social media to criticise him for referring to Ed as British and questioned why the segment was re-recorded. "Did Matt just accuse Ed Byrne of being British?" one disappointed user asked while another posted: "At least 3 times before challenged..."

One viewer commented: "Oh Matt! 'There's nothing like British humour' he says to the Irish comedian, as this is not live, why didn't they stop and re-record that bit? #saturdaykitchen." Another pointed out how the presenter managed to call him British three times before he stopped.

Last year, Mock the Week star Ed's brother Paul died aged 45. The comic paid tribute, writing on social media: "Paul Byrne was a lot of things to a lot of people. A talented comedy director and stand up fixer, he was loved by so many. But to me, he was my pain-in-the-arse little brother and I will miss him so much. RIP Paul Byrne 1977-2022."
