A woman managed to dial 999 whilst she was being raped inside her attacker's home with police turning up within minutes.

Fernando Camutari, 41, was caught after police rushed to the property in Sheffield in the early hours of June 8, 2019, minutes after he forced himself on the woman, who was aged 21. He carried out the callous attack after he lured the woman back to his home after a night out.

In the harrowing call to emergency services, the woman could be heard begging Camutari to stop. Officers rushed to his home and arrested him as he stepped outside the property with the victim.

Camutari denied the allegations; he first insisted the woman had not been inside the address, despite CCTV footage showing them entering together. The rapist also denied that any sexual activity had taken place, despite forensic evidence proving otherwise. Following his initial arrest, Camutari was charged on September 17, 2020 with rape and two counts of sexual assault, reports Yorkshire Live.

After a four-day trial, the jury returned guilty verdicts on all charges on Friday. He was sentenced to six years and nine months for rape, and three years for each charge of sexual assault to run concurrently to his sentence for rape.

DC Tom Ryan, of South Yorkshire Police's Major Crime Unit said: "I would first like the commend the remarkable bravery and determination of the victim in this case. Not only was she incredibly quick-thinking on the night of the attack, she has also been patient, tenacious and unwavering during what has been a four-year wait for justice. There was damning evidence in this case, including the recorded 999 call, some key forensics and footage which categorically disputed Camutari’s lies."

He added: "I am pleased with the decision reached by the jury today and I hope this is a step-forward for the victim in her journey to recovering from this ordeal. I would like to say, on record, if you are a victim of a sexual assault, please report it. We will do all we can to secure justice for you and put the right support around you. Please do come forward."
