Rockstar has announced that the original Red Dead Redemption, as well as it's Undead Nightmare DLC, will be coming to the Nintendo Switch and PS4 later this month.
Rumours of a Red Dead Redemption remaster have been swirling for since late June – with changes to the Rockstar Games website pointing to a Nintendo Switch version showing up last month. Despite previous rumours suggesting it could be a full remaster, Rockstar has now announced on it's website that a re-release of the original Red Dead Redemption is coming to Nintendo Switch and PS4, with a release set for August 17, 2023. This move brings the PS3 classic to modern consoles for the first time, as it will be playable on PS5.
The game launches next week as a digital release, but those wanting a physical copy are in luck as Rockstar has also confirmed that physical copies of the game are set to arrive on October 13, 2023. The new release seems to be a straight port rather than an upgrade, which could explain the absence of an Xbox version, as the game is already backwards compatible on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. This does mean, however, that the game is once again skipping a PC release as it did back in 2010, in a move that will no doubt be disappointing for gamers on PC.
Back From the Dead
This version will also come with the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare DLC included at launch. This DLC has hero John Marston battling undead hordes as he seeks to find a cure to the zombie infestation. Considering the late 2000's infatuation with zombies we wouldn't blame you for giving this one a miss at launch, but despite the goofy premise, the Undead Nightmare DLC is a fantastic expansion to the game.
Those who played GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and are worried about this version turning out to be a mess, worry not, as Rockstar Games has confirmed that Double Eleven Studios (co-developers of Minecraft Dungeons) are leading this port rather than Grove Street Games. If all goes well it'll be a solid way to experience one of Rockstar's greatest games on modern platforms, let's just hope that the PC version arrives sooner rather than later.
