Will Fish has returned to Scottish club Hibs on a loan deal after being involved in Manchester United ’s pre-season.

Manchester-born Fish made his senior debut for United in the final match of the 2020/21 Premier League away at Wolves but he has spent the subsequent two campaigns away on loan. He represented Stockport the following year before spending last season at Hibs.

Fish came on as a substitute in each of United’s pre-season games against Leeds and Lyon, while he started against Wrexham in a youthful line-up during the match held in the United States. However, United believe the best progress for the central defender is to spend more time out on loan.

But as has been detailed by the Daily Record, while the agreement is a season-long loan deal – United have retained an option to ‘review’ the defender’s status in January. That means they would be allowed to recall him that month, should they desire.

Hibs boss Lee Johnson has said: “We’re delighted to get this deal over the line and bring Will back to the club. During his first season with us he showed that he is a player with real quality, and he adds composure and consistency to our back-line. Everyone at the club is looking forward to working with Will again and having him around the building.”

Fish is the latest exit from United’s first-team squad as Erik ten Hag looks to reduce the club’s wage bill, slim down his squad and also secure transfer fees. Alex Telles and Anthony Elanga have both been sold this week, to Al-Nassr and Nottingham Forest respectively.

They have followed the exits of David de Gea, Jack Butland, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe, while Charlie Savage has joined Reading. However, United are keen to conclude several more outgoings over the coming weeks.

Fred is likely to leave the club while there is interest from West Ham in Scott McTominay. Eric Bailly is available for a permanent exit following his return from a loan spell at Marseille while Brandon Williams and Dean Henderson are also expected to be moved on.

United have signed Mason Mount and Andre Onana from Chelsea and Inter respectively, while they are also focused on the signing of striker Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta, with Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is also on their target list.
