A tornado has ripped through a European city with hundreds rescued from its path.

A terrifying video shows roofs being ripped off into the streets of Milan, Italy that are filled with fallen trees and damaged buildings.

The city was battered by wind and rain before the tornado began sweeping through the streets at around 11am local time. The extent of the damage remains unclear, but firefighters have been sent out on more than 110 calls.

Many areas are flooded, with fears several have been injured, reports Italian weather site MeteoWeb.

A van was also swept into a canal in the village of Bubbiano. Thankfully the driver managed to get out safely.

In another lucky escape, a driver survived after a tree fell onto their car in Cinisello Balsamo.

It comes two years after northern Italy suffered chaos after several tornadoes ravaged the region.

A series of twisters swept through Po Valley, between Lombardy and Emilia, after another tornado hit the island of Pantelleria.

At least six tornadoes struck Lombardy, while a seventh ripped through Emilia.

Meanwhile in 2018, a colossal tornado barrelled over choppy seas towards a tourist resort in Italy.

A video clip shows a tornadic waterspout, which looks like a superstorm from the blockbuster movie Twister, moving towards the south-western city of Salerno.

Witnesses said the massive column of water lifted around 20 heavy shipping containers in the port city and threw them around like children’s toys.
