A six-year-old girl had a seven-inch hair pin lodged in her throat after tripping and falling over.

The metal object penetrated the youngster's throat after she tripped and the tip exited behind her ear.

An image of the X-ray scan shows the large pin implanted from the child's mouth to near the back of her head.

The unnamed girl suffered with excessive bleeding and drooling from the mouth.

Local media said the six-year-old was also unable to open their mouth and had a twisted neck that caused their head to tilt at an angle.

The tip of the hair pin ended up protruding from the skin just behind hre left ear.

The youngster was rushed to a nearby medical centre in the West African country of Mali.

Scans of the child's neck and face show the metallic object in contact with or near the internal carotid artery and the jugular veins, and exiting just behind the ear.

The long object was removed from the child's throat after a successful operation.

The local authorities reminded residents to seek urgent medical care if their child appears to have swallowed or injured their throat with a foreign object.

Common symptoms include pain in the throat, pain when swallowing food, bleeding, and even loss of consciousness.
