Given that it's the one human experience that unites us all, it's perhaps unsurprising that so many people report dreaming about death, whether their nighttime visions show the loss of loved ones or their own demise.

As morbid and as frightening as such dreams can of course be, they don't necessarily mean that you have anything to fear in your waking life, despite what spooky premonitions in horror films may have taught you.

Indeed, dreams about death can, in fact, have a variety of positive meanings, and analysing them could well help you examine your life in closer detail. Of course, death dreams can vary greatly, and it's important to consider other aspects if you want to dig a little deeper into meanings and symbolism.

In an article penned for Cosmopolitan, psychic medium, tarot card reader, and author Valeria Ruelas delved into five types of death dreams, revealing what they could mean.

Dreaming about your own death

According to Ruelas, whether you die violently or peacefully in your dreams could unlock the meaning. A violent death could suggest you need to "be careful" and keep an eye out for "immediate dangers and enemies", while a peaceful death could well be "a symbol of moving on, graduating, changing, or spiritual awakening".

Remarking that such dreams are often related to trauma, Ruelas added that they could also represent a need to move on from someone or something, whether that be forgetting about a particular person or putting an experience behind you.

Dreaming about the death of a family member or loved one

Ruelas says she'll usually tell people to just "ignore" dreams about a loved one passing away, but notes that it could be a sign to leave your home, city, or general comfort zone for pastures new.

Dreaming about a pet dying

As per Ruelas, dreams about the death of a pet could well point toward "sadness or feelings of abandonment". As with dreams about a loved one dying, it could be worth taking the time to think about what's been bothering you.

Waking up just before dying in a dream

Ruelas wrote: "This type of dream could mean that you are supposed to figure something out from the clues. I would pay extra close attention to what is said in dialogue in these dreams, as they can be instructive about how you should live your life and what decisions you should make."

Having recurring dreams about death

Offering some reassurance, Ruelas continued: "Usually, dreaming about dying simply means that you are a worrier. It also could mean you're not getting enough rest. It does *not* mean that you are doomed!"
