The Met Office has offered an explanation on why the Charon heatwave sweeping across Europe will not reach the UK.

The new weather system entered the region on Sunday following days of unbearable heat caused by the Cerberus heatwave.

It is expected to push temperatures to as high as 48C in Sardinia, Italy, which could break Sicily’s 48.8C record from August 2021.

Forecasters have now revealed that the sweltering temperatures aren't "expected to have any direct impact on the UK", as the heat will slowly move further southeast next week.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon told the Mirror: "Anyone hoping to see warmer weather in the UK might be disappointed.

"The European heat isn’t expected to have any direct impact on the UK in the current forecast period.

"The southern shift of the jet steam - which is a ribbon of winds high up in the atmosphere that drives much of our weather - is helping to develop high pressure across southern Europe and northern Africa and are bringing some extremely high temperatures for the region, well beyond their usual averages.

"Temperatures could reach into the mid-40s Celsius in some parts of Greece and Turkey and remain very high overnight as well. The focus of the European heat will gradually shift further southeast over the next week and isn’t going to impact the UK."

Over the weekend, the UK was battered with rain and wind as forecasters issued yellow weather warnings across the south of England and South Wales.

Brits have been told that temperatures will not pass the low 20Cs this week and can expect to see showers and heavy rain.

The weather will continue to around mid-August before Brits could notice a slight increase in heat.

The Met Office added: "Because of the position of the jet stream, what we’re seeing at the moment is more of an Atlantic influence on our weather with a succession of low pressure systems meaning the weather feels largely unsettled for many, with some longer periods of rain and wind at times.

"Between those spells, sunshine and showers is the main theme of the forecast, with temperatures remaining around average for the time of year for the UK."
