Jeremy Vine's wife's fears after BBC presenter scandal broke

Jeremy Vine has revealed his wife Rachel feared for his safety after the BBC presenter scandal broke over the weekend.

On Friday evening, it was reported an unnamed male BBC presenter had paid a young person £35,000 for sexually explicit photos over the course of three years from the age of 17.

As the reports came out on Friday July 7, a number of male BBC stars came forward to deny they were the unnamed person in question.

Gary Lineker, Jeremy Vine, Rylan Clark, Nihal Arthanayake and Nicky Campbell have all denied they are the anonymous presenter.

Jeremy, who hosts a programme on BBC Radio 2, wrote in a tweet on Saturday July 8: "Just to say I'm very much looking forward to hosting my radio show on Monday — whoever the 'BBC Presenter' in the news is, I have the same message for you as Rylan did earlier: it certainly ain't me."

Later that day, Jeremy attended a Bruce Springsteen concert at Hyde Park but admitted his wife feared for his safety if he were to go.

Speaking on his eponymous Channel 5 show, Jeremy explained: "I had a situation, I was going to see a Bruce Springsteen concert at the weekend, my wife said: 'Are you gonna be safe there?' That's how serious this thing is. And she gave me a baseball cap and said, 'you better wear this', imagine I'm in this situation – ridiculous."

Jeremy was then asked if he thinks the unnamed presenter should come out, to which he said: "I think it's better for him if he does. I think he needs to... he will have to answer this. And what's happening is all this stuff is aggregating with no response. He must have a defence, he must have one. Maybe he's going to say, 'it's all a misunderstanding', I assume. But the idea he's going to stay anonymous forever and one day walk back into the building with his ID pass, oh no that's not going to happen."

It comes after Jeremy tweeted last night to urge the unnamed presenter to come forward, after more allegations were made about the unnamed host.

It has now been alleged the unnamed star sent abusive messages to a person in their early 20s when they refused to meet up.

The unnamed star is also said to have broken lockdown rules to meet a separate 23-year-old stranger from a dating site.

And a fourth person, now 22, has alleged the star sent them 'creepy' messages using 'love hearts and kisses' on Instagram when they were 17-years-old.

In light of the new claims, Jeremy took to Twitter to share his plea as he wrote: "I’m starting to think the BBC Presenter involved in the scandal should now come forward publicly.

"These new allegations will result in yet more vitriol being thrown at perfectly innocent colleagues of his. And the BBC, which I’m sure he loves, is on its knees with this. But it is his decision and his alone."
